FAQ’s

HOW DO I ENROLL AND REGISTER FOR JAX CITY BALLET SCHOOL CLASSES?

Registration is completed online for new families or through the parent portal for returning families.

WHAT ARE THE AUDITIONS/PLACEMENTS LIKE?

Based on your child’s age and previous dance experience, they will attend a class where they are evaluated individually during classwork.  Students who are on pointe will be asked to bring pointe shoes to their audition/placement class. No previous training or experience is necessary to audition for Jax City Ballet School, as students will be placed based on the evaluation from our faculty during the audition/placement class.

IS THERE A FEE FOR THE AUDITION/PLACEMENT?

Yes, there is a $25 placement/audition fee for all new students seeking placement or returning students who did not have a continuous enrollment with us.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO THE AUDITION/PLACEMENT?

Students are asked to wear a black or solid colored leotard, pink or flesh toned tights with matching ballet shoes. If students are on pointe, please bring pointe shoes. Hair in a ballet bun, unless it cannot be placed into one, otherwise please have neatly pulled back away from face.

WHEN WILL I BE NOTIFIED OF MY AUDITION/PLACEMENT RESULTS?

Results are sent via email within 3-5 business days from the class.

ONCE I RECEIVE MY RESULTS, HOW CAN I REGISTER FOR CLASSES?

Registration is completed online. Families can either find their eligible program on our webpage and proceed with enrollment at www.JaxCityBallet.org

IF I WITHDRAW IN THE MIDDLE OF THE YEAR, AM I PROVIDED A REFUND?

All tuition towards class hours that have passed are not eligible for a refund. If a student withdraws in the middle of the year, the family forgoes all fees and tuition paid up to that point, however would not be charged for tuition from the withdraw date forward. The withdrawal form must be submitted in order to have a withdraw official processed. Families are responsible for tuition until the form is submitted.

IF MY SCHEDULE CHANGES AND I NEED TO SWITCH TO ANOTHER CLASS/DAY OR TIME (SHOULD IT BE AVAILABLE) AM I ABLE TO?

Students can transfer to another class session of their current level, prior to November 1st for a $10 fee, pending capacity and availability. Some levels only have one schedule option and therefore an accommodation would not be provided. Transfers after this date are subject to the department head’s approval due to showcase and exam preparations.

DOES JAX CITY BALLET SCHOOL HAVE A DRESS CODE?

Yes, each level has a specified dress code. Dress code information can be found on our webpage for families seeking the information directly related to their child’s level.

IF MY CHILD IS ABSENT, CAN THEY ATTEND A MAKE-UP CLASS?

Make-up classes are not permitted for student absences. In the event that JCBS may close due to inclement weather or a mandated state of emergency, we may schedule make-up days to accommodate closures.

AFTER COMPLETING A SEASON WITH Jax City Ballet School,  HOW DO I KNOW WHICH LEVEL TO ENROLL THEM FOR THE FOLLOWING YEAR?

CBS provides two evaluations per year to students:

  • A Mid-year evaluation which is general and includes commentary on their progression thus far in the year. This evaluation will also address any concerns regarding their progression.
  • A year-end evaluation, which is completed either by JCBS artistic faculty . When you receive this evaluation, your students level recommendation for the next season will be provided.

STUDENT EVALUATIONS

At JCBS, we provide bi-annual student evaluations: once in January, and once in May or August. At that time, we will determine if a student has progressed enough in their training to be ready for the next level. Students will only be advanced if the teaching team believes more advanced work will be beneficial to the student.

We take many details into consideration before inviting a student to the next level of training. Please note that we have a separate set of criteria for Pointe Class invitations. Below are some of the criteria we consider before moving a student up. The student should:

  • Be consistently taking at least 2 ballet classes a week for at least 6 months.
  • Demonstrate consistent growth and development of proper ballet body placement; stomach pulled up, tailbone down, ribs closed over hip bones.
  • Show improvement in their foot arches, consistently working to stretch through tips of the toes.
  • Show growth in their relevé position.
  • Show continued improvement in their hip and leg turn-out.
  • Show a commitment to their ballet training by:
    • arriving to class on time with hair in a classical bun
    • wearing the correct uniform, including proper canvas shoes with ribbons
    • being considerate and respectful towards the instructor and fellow students
    • not talking in or disrupting the class
    • demonstrating age-appropriate emotional maturity during classes

All of the above should be exhibited by the student on a consistent basis. When a student is evaluated and deemed ready for advancement, then a JCBS Director will contact the parent directly to invite the student to next level. We kindly ask that parents and students do not request JCBS faculty to move the student to the next level. Rather, please trust that a JCB Director will contact the parent directly, when we believe the student is ready to advance.

WHEN DOES MY DANCER GET TO GO EN POINTE?

At JCB, we provide bi-annual student evaluations. At this time, we will determine if a student has progressed enough in their training to be ready for the next level, including pointe work.  Pointe work requires incredible leg and foot strength, as well as proper spinal posture, and maturity. We must consider the student’s age, posture, level of training, frequency of ballet and conditioning classes, ballet body placement, and emotional maturity.  Below are the JCB requirements that must be met before we will consider starting a student in pointe ballet classes. The student must;

  • Have been consistently taking at least 2 ballet classes a week for at least 2 years.
  • Have been consistently taking PBT/Progressing Ballet Technique class once a week for at least 1 year. This class prepares the student with the strength training and conditioning necessary to be on pointe.
  • Have consistent control of body placement: stomach pulled up, tailbone down, ribs closed over hip bones.
  • Consistently have fully stretched arches, with feet stretched through tips of the toes.
  • Have strong ankles; no wobbling.
  • Use turn-out effectively and consistently.
  • Show that she is serious about ballet. We determine this by some of the following characteristics:
    • Arriving to class on time daily
    • Not missing classes
    • Participating in our bi-annual ballet performances
    • Arriving to class with her hair in a classical bun, wearing the correct uniform
    • Showing consideration and respect for the instructor and fellow students
    • Not talking during or disrupting class

All of the above requirements must be exhibited by the student on a consistent basis. When a student reaches the level where she is ready for pointe work, a JCB Director will contact you directly.

We kindly ask that you do not request JCB faculty to place your student on pointe.
